Not my cup of tea...usually

This past Saturday was the annual Briarwood Garage sale. Briarwood is the neighborhood that my mother and father live in and every year they choose a day and charge the homeowners who want to participate $25 and advertise like crazy. It is a big deal. To see the cars streaming in makes me laugh out loud.

I am usually up at my mom's bright and early putting things on the tables outside just so and making sure that everything in clearly marked. I love having garage sales. I love being able to de-clutter my house and make some serious cash too! I have had many successful garage sales in my past. On the other side of the coin, I hate going to garage sales. Call me crazy but I am not a fan of MOST people's junk. And yes, there are lots of wonderful things to be found and AMAZING prices on things that are almost as good as new. But it is most likely stuff that you DON'T NEED. Would you go out to the store to be buying those toys for your children, or how about that great kitchen gadget that you just snagged? Probably not, so I say save those dollars and spend them on the things that you are actually going to the store to purchase. Use those dollars to buy higher quality things (they last longer and then you can sell them at your own garage sale because they held up better.) I know this all sounds a little backwards, but hey, I am a little backwards.

Anyways, last week Josh and I had been checking craigslist to find a bike trailer and possibly a bike for me. We saw a couple but they still wanted like $50-$100 bucks for the trailer. So we set out Saturday with ONE specific item in mind... a bike trailer. Kendra and Ethan were rather excited since we don't go to garage sales very often and came loaded with their wallets. At the very first sale we went to Kendra found a pair of rollerblades just her size. She has definitely broke them in since then and didn't have a single problem learning how to skate in them. I was really surprised, seems like it took me quite a while to get comfortable on those things. These babies set her back $3 and she definitely thinks that it was money well spent. I am just glad she brought her own money, because I would have said no! A scooter, a bike, and tons more outside toys are enough! As we were cruising along the streets of Briarwood Josh slammed on his brakes and veered left to turn around and almost hit a car in the process. I had spotted the prize!!!
This little puppy was sitting on the end of a driveway just waiting for us to come along. As I hoped out and weaved through the crowd, (yes a crowd) I looked for the price. $5! WHAT, you have got to be kidding me, is something wrong with it! The dad came over with a piece in his hand. It was the fitting to attach it to a bike. All pieces were accounted for! Holy cow, we took that trailer and laughed the whole way home. Well almost, we were still scoping out the neighborhood for a bike. We never found a bike, but did manage to find a helmet for Aubrey for a whopping $.25.

We got it all hooked up and Preston and Aubrey both LOVE it! I am so excited and can't wait to get a bike of my own. The other day we went for a quick ride before we headed out to my parents' house for dinner. Since I don't have my own bike I got to ride the razor scooter. Yup, you read it right, the scooter. I got MANY strange looks but I think I got a better workout than Josh did because when we got back my rear-end was KILLING me. So there you have it, my philosophy on garage sales, as strange as it may seem it works for me. And I am just thankful that my hubby sees it the same way I do. Oh and by the way, we will be having a garage sale of our own in a couple weeks if anyone is in need of baby stuff or kick-knacks we are trying to make enough to get me a bike :)
